Appalachian Service Project
Since 1999, volunteers from Pleasantville have traveled to Central Appalachia each summer for a week-long home-repair ministry with the Appalachia Service Project, Inc., a Tennessee-based non-profit organization (asphome.org)" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://www.asphome.org/">asphome.org).
Pleasantville Presbyterian Church oversees and organizes the Pleasantville ASP mission with volunteers from across the community.
Most of our volunteers are high-school aged. Youth volunteers must be at least 15 years old and must have finished ninth grade to be eligible to go on the mission trip. Adult volunteers who wish to go on the mission trip must be willing and able to take responsibility for a team of youths and manage a home repair project at the direction of ASP staff.
In a normal year, we do local community service, skill-building, team-building, sensitivity training, and fundraising during the spring. The summer mission trip and the activities leading up to it are opportunities for personal as well as spiritual growth.
In 2020, we canceled plans for the mission trip because of COVID-19, but thanks to the generosity and compassion of our volunteers, the Pleasantville Presbyterian Church has been able to send support to ASP to help it through this difficult time. ASP also suspended its summer 2020 volunteer program, but they continue to serve needy families in Central Appalachia the safest way they can with the help of essential staff and local contractors.
