In order to protect all library users’ right of access to library facilities, to insure the safety of patrons and staff, and to protect library resources and facilities from damage, the Library Board of Trustees has established the following Code of Conduct.

1.    Patrons shall be engaged in activities associated with the use of a public library while in the building.
2.    Patrons shall respect the rights of other patrons and shall not interfere with others’ use of the library. Loud conversations (with other persons or on a cell-phone) or disruptive behavior is prohibited.
3.    Staff must be allowed to perform their duties in a comfortable and non-threatening environment. Harassing or threatening verbal or physical behavior towards staff will not be tolerated.
4.    Any materials removed from the Library must be checked out on a valid library card (See Library Card Policies).
5.    Patrons may not deface books, magazines, newspapers, recordings or other items of the Library collection, nor deface or in any other way destroy or damage library furnishings, walls, machines or library property.
6.    The study carrels on the west end of the Library are a designated Quiet Area. Patrons who are talking or making any disruptive noises such as keyboard typing, may be asked to relocate to another area in the Library.
7.    Patrons are welcome to plug their laptops into the Library’s electrical system at their own risk, but the connection must be set up so that there is no trip and fall hazard created for other patrons.
8.    Food is not permitted in the Library. Consumption of non-alcoholic beverages in closed containers is permitted by adults and children accompanied by adults in the Library.
9.    Patrons will not be permitted to enter the building without a shirt or other covering of their upper bodies, or without shoes or other footwear. Patrons whose bodily hygiene is so offensive as to interfere with the use of the Library by other patrons may be required to leave the building.
10.    Patrons may not bring pets or animals into the library, other than assistance animals for the disabled.
11.    No person shall obstruct the entrances to the Library.
12.    No person shall petition for signatures, conduct surveys or distribute printed materials while on the premises of the Library. Solicitations, for any purpose, and the selling of tickets or merchandise of any kind are also prohibited on library premises.
13.    The Library parking lot is intended for use by Library patrons and employees only while engaged in library activities. All other uses are unauthorized and may be subject to fine and/or towing.
14.    In situations where staff members feel that the health, safety or security of library users or staff members is threatened, they may take appropriate action including, but not limited to, calling the police for assistance.
15.    Photographing, filming or recording on Library premises without consent is prohibited.
16.    Library staff members may ask a Library user to leave the premises with or without prior warning, depending upon the seriousness of the violation. The Library further reserves the right to suspend library privileges, which may include excluding a patron or visitor from MPPL facilities. If such a course of action is being considered, the patron will be so advised by registered mail and will be given an opportunity to meet with members of the Library Administration and Board of Trustees.
