Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo is set in a fantasy world that mainly takes place in the slums of Ketterdam. The story follows Kaz Brekker, the owner of The Crow Club, and his ragtag crew of outcasts.  With the help of his crew, he plans to break one of the world’s leading scientists out of prison. The prize is one million kruge-- enough to change a life. Their plans are met with the constant upheaval that makes for high-stake situations.

Through several high-stakes battles and gripping heists, it’s not a surprise that this book has won so many awards in addition to a Netflix adaptation.

Personally, this is one of my favorite books! Six of Crows is mysterious and action-packed with just a touch of romance. The writing flows very well to give the reader an excellent sense of the character’s backstories. Even though it is a sequel, you don’t have to read the first trilogy to understand the plot. It has a tendency to jump back and forth between the past and the present to further explain characters’ relationships to each other and their identities. Overall it is a very well-written book with a gripping plot, and a fantastic fanbase to go along with it.

If you’re someone who likes young adult fantasy with a diverse cast, this is the book for you. There is a wide range of racial, ethnic, and queer diversity! This book is part of a series that has contributed to the revolutionization of the fantasy genre. It’s gritty and humorous at the same time. If you like character-centric stories and high-stake plotlines, this is the book for you!
